If you live in Los Angeles, it’s more acceptable to get away with casual fashion choices than say New York, London, Paris or any other fashion capitals of the world. We’re a bit more rebellious because of our year-round summer weather. Sure we may get 20 days or so of “bad” weather, but the clear blue skies and 80 degree temperature always come back.
With that said, denim shorts are a staple in my wardrobe. I have about 30+ pairs in varying styles, colors and lengths. My current fav is the Harley Bandits by One Teaspoon. I got them during One Teaspoon‘s Northern Hemisphere Sale last month (read SALES) for under $50. They run a little big on me and I got a size 24, but they’re meant to be worn slouchy and off-the-hips.
I’m wearing my denim shorts with a silk tie-front blouse that I had custom-made while visiting Shanghai, China in January this year. I love the juxtaposition of sophisticated and casual. You’ll see this often in my fashion choices and outfits that I post. Here are some blouses similar to the one I’m wearing:
- Equipment Slim Signature in True Black
- Trouve Silk Blouse in Black (at Nordstrom)
- L’Agence Margaret Double Pocket Top in Black (at Revolve)
- Equipment Adalyn Blouse in True Black (at Revolve)
It’s a very thin line when wearing heels with shorts, especially denim shorts, to go from stylish to street walker. My suggestion is to keep the shoe classy: closed toe, pointed toe, appropriate heel height. Suede (or faux suede) is a nice fabric for the fall. My faux suede d’Orsay platform heels are from Zara circa 2012…yeah, they’re that old. I think they were last seen worn on Selena Gomez. Even though they are no longer available, here are some similar styles:
- J.Crew Elisie Suede D’Orsay Pumps
- Charlotte Russe Pointed Toe D’Orsay Mini-Platform Pumps (on sale)
- Steve Madden Women’s Varcityy Two-Piece Pumps in Black Suede (on sale at Macy’s)
- Zara High Heel D’Orsay Shoes
Another detail that separates a ‘classy fashionista wearing denim shorts and heels’ from Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: don’t let your butt cheeks hangout. We’re not all video vixens dancing in a hip-hop music video, and in order to make this outfit streetwear appropriate, keep your apple bottoms covered. I love that these Bandits are not cheeky. They are short in the front, but have moderate coverage in the booty.
