KANGTHROPOLOGIE was built on the premise of sample sale finds.  I have become quite the sample sale queen since I first found out about them 5 years ago.  I believe one of my first LA sample sale was with Revolve.  It had brands like Lovers + Friends and NBD.  It was love at first swipe (of my credit card).

I must have attended at least 20 sample sales since then, and I have picked up some tips that I will now share to those who are curious about going to one of these bargain events.  (BTW, I post sample sales and online sales I find worthy on my SALES page.  Be sure to check back often so you don’t miss out.)

This is probably the most vital advice I can offer.  If you’re going to a sample sale of a popular brand with a cult following, odds are people will start lining up as early as 4 hours in advance.  No joke.  Girls will travel far, and they will bring chairs, blankets, books, etc while they wait.

I remember going to my first Stone Cold Fox sample sale.  I went with a friend and we showed up maybe an hour before it started.  We ended up waiting in line for 3 hours.  Literally 3 hours.  By the time we made it in, all the good stuff have already been purchased and everything was picked through.  Showing up early will guarantee you the pick of the litter.  You get to sift through all the merch while it’s still nicely hung up on racks.

If you never been to a sample sale, be mentally prepared for a stampede of women who will push and shove past you to get the latest and greatest.  Walk through quickly and pick out stuff that instinctively jump out at you.  Don’t waste your time on deciding if it’s something you really like.  You can figure that out later when you try things on, which is another thing we will discuss in tip #3.  Everything is at a “first come, first serve” basis so if you grab the item first, you can decide if you want to keep or toss later.

Rarely will you find a separate dressing room at these sample sales.  They’re usually held at some open space warehouse, and you might be lucky if there’s a mirror or two for you to try things on and see how they actually look on you.  A lot of girls like to bring their boyfriends as well.  With that said, wear undergarments that you wouldn’t mind being seen in by a lot of strangers, male and female.

The first time I brought a friend with me, I forgot to tell her that there were no individuals dressing rooms.  She didn’t wear any underwear that day, and basically couldn’t try anything on because she couldn’t take off her jeans.  I personally find it weird when girls bring boyfriends to these kind of things knowing that there will be a bunch of half naked women trying on clothes, but maybe they’re not the ones that are forking over the dough to pay for the clothes.  (Touché).

It took me a while to get use to tip #4 because everything was so heavily discounted that I didn’t want to miss out on not buying something and regretting it later.  Here’s the thing, half the stuff you buy, you won’t end up wearing and it will just pile up in your closet collecting dust.  A lot of the stuff you find at sample sales are overstock items from past seasons.  There’s a reason the stuff didn’t sell when it was in season.

Be selective about what you actually will wear.  I like to bring a friend with me to these things because they’re usually my voice of reason.  Do I REALLY need another swimsuit or jacket or black dress?  Will I be able to wear this more than once?  Is the item worth purchasing “as-is”?  A lot of the stuff are also returned items or have a missing button or slight tear.  Yes, it might cost just a fraction more to have it fixed, but is it worth it?  Ask yourself all these questions before you buy. Just because it’s heavily discounted doesn’t mean it’s free.  You’re still spending money.  The only exception would be if you were purchasing for the sole purpose of reselling it on eBay or Poshmark.

I use to freak out whenever I would miss out on a fabulous sample sale, but know that there WILL BE another one, and probably within the same year.  Brands are constantly trying to offload their inventory after the season is over.  You will most likely find sample sales happening during big seasonal transitions, like from winter to spring (for winter stuff), and from summer into fall (for summer stuff).

Besides, you don’t want all of your wardrobe to be last season’s stuff.  Intermix the items into your closet slowly and you’ll be able to rock the coolest brands without looking like last year’s September issue.

Hope you’ve found these tips helpful and best of luck on your first/next sample sale excursion.  Happy shopping!

Sometimes you fall in love with a print/pattern before you fall in love with the item.  There have been many episodes in my life where the print drew more attention from me, or at least is what attracted me to look at the item:

Exhibit A: Barnyard from Reformation (see MAY FLOWER)

Exhibit B: Jungle Floral from Lovers + Friends (post coming soon!)

Adding to this, I present Exhibit C: Night Animal from Lovers + Friends.  After shopping the Revolve sample sale a few weeks ago, I came home with a loot bag of goodies, including this Lovers + Friends Dakota Jumpsuit in Night Animal, which is currently on sale.  Outside of it’s colorful, leopard print, I found the corset top and cutout back enticing.

I styled it differently.  And by style I mean I just rolled up the pant legs to give it a more casual, cool look.  The hem isn’t too long to where I have to get it altered, but I wanted to give this jumpsuit more life than refinery.  I think my favorite pant leg look is two to three inches above the ankle.

If I wanted to dress this jumpsuit down more for a day look, I would toss a denim jacket over my shoulders and strap on some wedge sandals, (pant legs rolled up of course).

I’m headed to the beach this weekend for a super fun shoot with Amy Zhang of The Luxi Look.  If you haven’t done so, please check out her blog and Instagram.  One of the best things I’ve gained from fashion blogging is meeting other fabulous fashion bloggers.  And sometimes, they become a great friend.  Have any of you ever made friends from blogging?  I’d love to hear your stories!

I have been a good girl, …sort of.  I told myself I wouldn’t shop at all in the month of May until the much anticipated Reformation LA Sample Sale, which is happening this weekend.  As in RIGHT NOW.  You can stop reading if you like and start heading towards Venice.  No worries.  I COMPLETELY understand.  It’s Ref baby!  However, if you’re still reading, then know that I love you too.

It’s just been a sample sale haven in LA and every fav brand of mine is offloading goodies left and right.  I’ve become a thrill seeker the past two weeks jumping from one sample sale to the next.  My outfit today is an example of the glories that can come from a great sample sale.

I have on Lovers + Friends Monroe Romper in White, which is currently on sale.  The lace details on the hems are just gorgeous.  This can easily be dressed up with a pair of platform heels.  I also really love my new outwear addition, Reformation Easton Jacket in Camel, which I found at the Reformation sample sale (see SALES for details).  This cropped jacket is no longer available, but you can add yourself to the wait list and hope that it comes back in stock.  Here are some very similar items for this outfit:

I hear they’re restocking new stuff everyday at the Ref Sample Sale.  Let me know if you end up going and what fabulous stuff you went home with.  Xo!

It’s been WAAAYYY too long since my last CYBER MONDAY post.  My bad folks.  It doesn’t mean that I haven’t been shopping.  In fact, I’ve been doing a lot of sample sale shopping.  Great for me, but sucks for those of you that are not in the LA area.  I make sure to post all my sample sale info in my SALES page, so check it regularly to stay updated on the latest sales.  I’ll be showcasing my latest fashion finds and purchases in the weeks to come.  Get excited because lots of gorgeous dresses from Revolve!

Another thing to look forward to is the transitioning of Spring to Summer fashion.  I’m falling in love with Free People‘s easy breezy maxi dresses and rompers, sexy and feminine slips that can be worn over swimwear, and Flynn Skye‘s two piece sets.  Also, Gucci has made the comeback of comebacks with their latest accessories, and I’m OBSESSED with their Double G Buckle Belt and Angel Leather Platform Pump.

As you can see, the layout of this post has slightly changed.  Instead of scrolling through each individual store’s shopping cart and item, I’ve made it into a simple display that takes you to the item by just clicking on the image.

Free People, Nasty Gal, Neiman Marcus, UO, Intermix and Revolve are my shopping sites of choice this week.  P. S. Intermix is having a sale on sale.  Take an additional 30% off sale items!  TAKE ADVANTAGE.  Trust me.  Happy shopping my fashionistas!

They say the best things in life are free, like this Stone Cold Fox Texas Tube Top in White.  Nope, this is not an April Fool’s joke.  I seriously did get this top for FREE.  It was a freebie that the two creators of Stone Cold Fox passed out during their Moving Sale two weekends ago.  I would be passing out free goodies too if I had hundreds, if not thousands, of SCF fanatics drive to DTLA, wait in line for 4-6 hours in dreaded heat, just to score some fashion at sample sale prices.

Overall, it was a fun experience because I really got to know the girls waiting in line with me, and I went with my good blogger friend, Amy Zhang of The Luxi Look.  Plus, I scored this awesome tube top and another fancy thing that I’ll be posting soon.  Here are some similar looks:

I’m wearing a pair of Genetic Los Angeles The Burke Trouser Jeans that I got a few years back.  They are so ridiculously comfy and light.  Great pair of jeans to wear for Spring fashion.  I know Mom Jeans and cropped, frayed skinny jeans are in right now, but I like to think outside the box.  Plus, I like the comfort of a pair of trousers.  Here are some similar looks:

Ulla Johnson Anna Wide-Leg Jeans

Quay Australia Isabelle Cat-Eye Shades / Neckerchief (no real origin; I found tied on a purse I purchased in Shanghai)

I dare to brave the chaos that comes with attending a fabulous sample sale, but waiting for 4 hours was the longest I have ever waited.  Do you have some crazy sample sale stories?  What’s the longest you’ve waited in line for a sale?

You know that feeling when you wake up and you’re feeling great, your hair is just the right amount of messy, and your smile looks brighter than normal?  Right, me neither.  Which is why we need fashion therapy to help boost our moral every now and then.  Sometime you just need a dress that makes you feel alive, female,…pretty.

I went to the KeepSake Sample Sale in DTLA last week (see SALES for details) and found this pretty Keepsake Mirror Image Maxi Dress in an XS for only $10.  I’m telling y’all, Sample Sales are your best of best friends.  Sure they don’t have your size in everything that you love, but you’ll find that one or two diamond in the rough and walk out with the biggest smile on your face.

I still feel like the top of this dress is a bit too big, and will take it in to alterations to have it more fitted to my frame.  Keepsake is an Aussie brand, and I find that Aussie brands tend to run a little bigger than even American brands and especially European brands.  Here’s a similar look that’s on sale at UO.  pretty_IMG_7309

Remember this Armani Exchange Faux Shearling Bomber Jacket from FALL-ING?  It’s getting chilly in LA and this jacket is the perfect masculine piece to top off this feminine dress.  As you know, I love the juxtaposition of masculine/feminine or conservative/edgy.  It’s the ying and yang of fashion.

This jacket also provides just the right amount of warmth and coverage so that you don’t take away the flow of the dress.  Here’s a similar look.

I feel like I’ve been begging for cold weather in LA since early August, and now that we have it, I don’t want it.  Anyone else feeling this way?

Thanks for reading!  And as always, feel free to ask questions, leave a comment, or offer suggestions in the comments section below.  Happy Holidays!
